AB OBJECTIVE: To provide an appropriate care to AIDS patients by a
multidisciplinary staff at home, after a short period of
hospitalization. METHODS: 133 patients affected by AIDS (PWAs) were
followed, during a 43 months period, by a multidisciplinary home care
team, including medical, nursing, social and psychological staff,
supplied by SER.T. (Public Structures for i.v.d.a.) and coordinated by
Infectivologists of Pavia. RESULTS: We observed in many patients a
longer survival time; satisfaction was present in all subjects and in
the largest part of families. CONCLUSIONS: It has been possible, with
this integrated model of care (hospitalization, day-hospital, home
assistance) to provide adequate care to AIDS patients, reducing their
cost and relieving the pressure for admission in hospital. Quality of
life was referred by patients more human compared to previous
hospitalized periods.
